Health Coaching: What Is It and Why?

“Traditionally, wellness programs have been ‘one and done’ with very little positive outcome for the individual and zero return on investment for the organization,” Rich Siegenthaler, DHS Group VP of Employer Solutions, said.

Health coaching is something that’s working to change that.

What is it?

In its simplest form, health coaching is “the use of evidence-based, skillful conversation, clinical interventions and strategies to actively and safely engage client/patients in health behavior change.” In most cases, it includes a certified/educated health coach talking with a client - answering questions and giving advice on wellness related questions and concerns (topics like healthy eating, exercise programs and more).

Why use it?

As it becomes more and more apparent that healthy employees (and good population health) have a positive impact on companies’ bottom lines, health coaching is an option to value personal wellbeing instead of just all-encompassing wellbeing strategy that might not work for everyone.

“Organizations are FINALLY seeing the big picture as it relates to the value of personal wellbeing,” Siegenthaler said. “Companies are now understanding that if we focus on the individual rather than pounding wellness tasks down [an employee’s] throat, good things will derive from [the] sincerity.”

How do you do it?

Health coaching as part of an employee wellbeing program is a process that creates an opportunity for personal change – helping employees take their program a step further and make a real impact.

“If you want to succeed, you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success,” the famed John D. Rockefeller said.

When it comes to seeing real change within your employee wellbeing programming, health coaching is the way to do that.

DHS Group offers health coaching as part of its HealthSpective employee wellbeing programming. Recently, DHS Group’s VP of Employer Solutions Rich Siegenthaler hosted a webinar that expanded on the what, why and how of health coaching – including detailed information about how the program works and how you can get involved.
